Tony Caruso

Tony Caruso started his training in the late 1960's at the "Kangaroo Judo and Karate Academy" with Master Moss Hollis (that name keeps coming up doesn't it) where we did not have all the protective gear they have today.  Sometimes the training was brutal, I remember Moss Sensei tying me in knots when showing me judo  techniques.

Tony also enjoyed playing football at the time and gave karate up for some years.

In 1977 Tony joined the Army Reserves  and took up boxing and wrestling with some mates.

During that time won Best Gun Detachment Competitions 3 times promoted to  GUNNERY SGT and left in 1983.

It was at this time he met Sensie Frank Lawlor who was well known around martial art circles.  Frank Sensei had trained overseas with KUGB  Sensei  Kenasawa. Sensei Enoida and Terri O’Niel and other British Shotokan Champions, from the 70’s.

Tony started training and was so impressed that he trained with him until he became an instructor himself, and Frank Sensei retired, and I took over as instructor with Sensei Terry Black who is a great kata technician who also has a black belt in mixed Kung-Fu, before we graded together, through the SHOTOKAN KARATE CLUB.

Tony received his Shodan in 1989, Nidan in 1991, Sandan in 1994.

Over the years Tony has met and trained with and enjoyed the company of many other Martial Artists  from other styles, and organisations and still use the techniques I learned from them and incorporate together with shotokan eg. Hapkido, Kenshu Wantanabe  Goju ryu.

Some of these are Sensei Susuki  Wado Ryu, Sensei Sumi and any many others including our own Barrie Revell and some of the boys from the AMAA and I’m glad to be back and I look forward to meeting everybody.

Besides his personal achievements in the martial arts his greatest pleasure has been to train others in achieving their martial arts excellence, and especially my two sons Rick and Patrick, who are champions in there own right and are helping me instruct others to achieve their best, in Shotokan  both have trained with me since they were young kids, and have mixed with other Martial Artists, learning their craft well.
