First Aid Course (20th September 2008)

President Barrie Revell would like to invite expressions of interest in a Senior First Aid Course.

As you know as Instructors and students we need to constantly update our first aid knowledge so that we can help when ever the unforseen accident occurs.

Please contact the secretary,  and give him your expression of interest and we will advise when we have sufficient interest to approach one of the service providers in this expertise and go ahead with a course.

Child Protection Policy(15th September 2008)

Our Child protection Policy is online now for all to see.  To access it go to our Policies page where I have put a number of related messages.  You will find our Disclaimer, Privacy Policy and our Mission Statement here also.  Please take a look as the policy is binding to all members who volunteer at tournaments, competitions, gradings/rank promotions, training days and even visiting other clubs.  I encourage all members to become familiar with it and introduce it to your organisation.  I believe that if you have your own C.P.P. it will not conflict with ours as it covers all aspects.

Those of you in S.A. who teach children all the time and volunteer at A.M.A.A. events or would like to, please come to us first for your police check as we get it done at no cost.

Sorry to those inter-state because it can only be done on a state by state basis....if you would like to apply in your state we would be glad to back you up in your application.

The three officers to contact are:

Barrie Revell

Roger Coole and

Andrew Payne, they're contact details are on this website.

(14th September 2008)

The Zen Suru Kirisuto Nature Dojo was well attended this morning despite the weather.

We started our session in the small open verandah until the rain passed and then simply stepped out onto the grassy slopes over looking the stormy ocean.

Breakfast proved so good we did not leave the Kiosk until 12 noon.

We also caught a quick glimpse of Andrew Payne, as he drove past as our visiting BUDDAH.

Our Next Nature Dojo will be held at Kyoshi's House ...  2A Windara Ave, Burnside at 8.30 am Sunday 5th October.

at Waterfall Gully Oval 200m away. BBQ breaky at oval.

Thank you to Ester, Roy, Ruth, Andrea, and Isabel for a great session where we celebrated "The Storm Element" with nature this morning.

Apologies from the visiting Buddah....I saw I person and half a dozen cars this morning at Hallet Cove but I missed half a dozen people waving at me.  I look forward to not missing you next time you come down this way....I can't help get the feeling that they are all smiling at me.

(7th September 2008)

The AMAA wants to congratulate Tony Caruso on attaining his LONG overdue 4th Dan (Yondan) and Renshi (lower level master) title. Tony last graded in 1993 and has been a Sandan ever since

The Grading Panel was most impressed with Tony's credentials. Just briefly, Tony was a former student of Frank Lawlor of the KUGB and is a Shotokan karate stylist. Tony has also trained with Grand Master Bill Vaughan (dec'd), Moss Hollis (dec'd), Tatsuo Suzuki (world head of Wado Ryu), Hanshi Barrie Revell (AMAA President), Kenshu Watanabe (Goju Ryu) and a host of others.

Hanshi Barrie Revell and Sensei Geoff Worden visited Tony's club recently and they were both very impressed with the standard of the students and the quality of the instruction that was on display.

Congratulations to Renshi Tony Caruso, the AMAA's newest 4th Dan. We are proud to have you as a valued member of our team.

(7th September 2008)

Tatakai would like to invite all members and friends to the grading of Shiane Coole and Sharna Lloyd-James, seen below participating in the Inter-Club Competition.

Proceedings will start at 10:00am until finished.

Barbecue afterwards.

No News of late....maybe a joke or two for your time....keep coming back.

Inter-Club Competition

Not a Gi in site....what a very unusual gathering of martial artists....about fifty members, friends and family gathered for the Inter-Club Competitions presentation day.

Congratulations to the Yellow Team (Geoff. and the Shin Gi Tai guys) on taking out the Bill Vaughan perpetual Trophy.

They took out a number of personal and team awards besides the BV Trophy.

A number of other awards went to all teams that participated.

Roger asked me today how the Blue Teams Brendan Elsworthy's carpentry skills were as he needs a new shelf for his trophies, bagging three for the day. Getting one trophy voted for by his peers for spirit of martial arts, one for winning the sparring section and one for highest score within his team.

I will post all the names of the medal winners and what they were awarded them for.

Check out the competition page for details.Photos now online

Peter Phillips received his 4th dan grading certificate from Barrie and Roger.

He also received Damien Seidel's 3rd dan certificate on his behalf.

A highlight of the day was when Roger hijacked the proceedings (his words not mine) to present his son Aaron with his 5th dan certificate from Tatakai Martial Arts and Self Defence Academy.

The unusual expressions came about because Roger choked up on presenting Aarons grading certificate.  We don't see the softer side of Martial Artists very often.

(24th August)

Zen Suru Kirisuto ... next Nature Dojo ... Hallett Cove Reserve on Sunday 14th of September at 8.30 am

Thank you to all who attended this morning at Belair. Again there was a cold bite in the air as we trekked down

to the Sequoia's from Waverley Lodge in Belair National Park.

You were Passionately Passionate! to EXPERIENCE the elements.

Thank you to Esta and Ruth who accompanied Kyoshi into the ocean at Pier St Glenelg afterwards.

It was 2 degrees or below, and we stayed in for 15 minutes, congratulations to Esta who has never entered cold water

or that long before, and now has great FOCUS towards her Mind Meditations & Katas.

Tentatively, the article has been scheduled for the October or November 2008 issue. However, at this stage, nothing is definite. More details will be given when a definite publishing date is known.

Special thanks to the President Hanshi Barrie Revell and Kyoshi Gary Simpson for making me an honorary member of their own personal styles and the kind and motivating words said about me personally and the members of the National Karate Academies.

I feel the martial arts spirit (Budo) in South Australia is getting stronger and united.

5th August 2008)

I would like to publicly THANK Sensei Roy Fuller of the Bushido Karate Club for so kindly picking my wife and I up from the airport and driving us to our hotel when we were in Adelaide over the weekend for the celebration of Steve Miranda's 8th Dan grading and his new title of Professor.

Roy is such a gentleman. He even bought a box of Lindt chocolates for my wife! What a guy.

Thanks Roy. We REALLY appreciated it.

Regards

Gary Simpson

Perth

(2nd August 2008)

Steve Miranda's 8th Dan grading and AMAA endorsed title of Professor lived up to everything that was promised... a very spectacular and professional presentation, held at the Adelaide Hilton Hotel on 2nd August 2008 from 6.00pm to midnight.

The evening started right at the moment the AMAA party – which included Hanshi Barrie Revell (President) and his wife Jenny, Vice President Sensei Roger Coole and his wife Margaret, Sensei Geoff Worden and his wife Debbie, Sensei Tony Caruso, AMAA Committee man Adam Stevens and Kyoshi Gary Simpson and his wife, Cheryle – entered the hotel foyer. A scrolling banner announcing “Kancho Steve Miranda’s 8th Dan Grading” greeted them.

What followed just kept coming. The NKA demonstration team consisting of Kyoshi Gregg Braun (6th Dan), Shihan Craig Hutchinson (5th Dan) and Renshi Shannon Clifford (4th dan) all did a great job.

The climax of the evening, undoubtedly, was Steve's elevation to the title of Professor. This was an announcement made by the AMAA after speeches by Hanshi Barrie Revell and Kyoshi Gary Simpson.

Many memorable gifts and presentations were made to Professor Miranda including a wonderful wall piece featuring the gi top and belt belonging to Steve's long term instructor and mentor, Kancho Bill Fenton.

The displays, demonstrations, DVD screenings and all the presentations went off extremely well. Kyoshi Gregg Braun was presented with Steve Miranda's old 7th Dan belt but will have to wait a few years more to grade to that title and Renshi Shannon Clifford was elevated in title from Renshi to Shihan.

The entertainment was very good. The comedian was ribaldly hilarious and the band "Jungle Joose" were very good but very loud.

The AMAA is proud to have Professor Steve Miranda and his National Karate Academies - Zen Do Ryu System as one of its member clubs.

In all, a wonderful evening was had by all.

PS: Bouncers were not needed to keep the strays out.

(31 July 2008)

It was great to hear from Karol Stojko (Founding Member) as of last week.

Thanks for the most favourable comment about the website, I appreciate it very much.

We at the A.M.A.A look forward to seeing Karol at our events....there is always a place for someone as experienced as Karol here.

BLITZ MAGAZINE FEATURES HANSHI BARRIE REVELL

As promised, Blitz Martial Arts Magazine has done a 4 page full colour spread of our own President - Hanshi Barrie Revell. Go and grab a copy of Vol 22 No 8 and turn to pages 72 to 75.

The AMAA wants to congratulate Blitz's Managing Editor Ben Stone and his very talented staff on the wonderful layout and graphics

This article will reveal some interesting insights into Barrie's martial arts life and his long term study under Grand Master Bill Vaughan. Many other martial artists are also mentioned including our own Karol Stojko, Joe Lamarca (Founding Members), Geoff Worden (pictured in the article) and Andrew Quin.

The article is titled: "Of Doves and Slashing Steel" which was used to show the balance of yin and yang that is so prevalent in eastern religions and martial arts.

The A.M.A.A would also like to thank Gary Simpson for his tireless work on behalf of our organisation and for writing this article in Blitz Martial Arts Magazine.

Inter-Club Competitution (25th July?2008)

South East School of Jik Cheung Kung Fu and Tai Chi celebrates it's twenty fifth anniversary this year. They have been a well respected member of the Australian Martial Arts Association for twenty four years now.

We at the A.M.A.A. wish Ray Potterat, Bruce Jordan and the guys another great twenty five years.

President Revell said "they are held in high esteem amongst the members of the A.M.A.A".

(17th of July 2008)

S A Karate visited Bushido Karate Club last night to assist in presenting belts and certificates for those who passed their grading recently.

Chief Instructor Joe Lamarca (founding member A.M.A.A.), Andrew Payne and Martin Morrow were treated with the utmost respect and courtesy by Roy Sensei and his students.

Joe Sensei was asked by Roy Sensei to say a few words.  Joe Sensei reminisced about how he once sat on the floor 45 years ago in a similar position.

He stressed that if they trained hard and allowed karate to become part of their lives, they could be leaders in the martial arts.

Most of the older children got to spar with either Martin or Andrew last night.

Then Andrew and Martin gave a demonstration of well controlled full contact karate. (Martins fat lip comes from one of the boys....not Andrew....by the way)

Z.S.K. Nature Dojo this morning 13th July Pier Street Glenelg

Thank you to Andrea and Ruth this morning. I did not expect more than two for this mornings COLD Nature Dojo.

We had a great Kata workout, Breath Mastery, and Meditation on the glenelg lawns as the sun rose and then in for an invigourating swim  for 15 minutes. This greatly enhances the Seat of the Dragon (The Liver) in its ability to move your Ki (Vital Force) ... 2 degrees in the water folks.

Thank you also to Catherine and Rose for their support, as they joined us in the swim.

The guys seem have gone west with the ducks, the women are leading the edge when it comes to getting out into adventurous nature, away from the comforts of rationality.

This Dojo pushes the boundaries into the 'Outrageous'!

Our next Nature Dojo will be held on Sunday the 3rd of August at 4 AM! .. YES! .. 4AM

This will be a special meditative Dojo at Kyoshi's House during the time of REM Sleep (Rapid Eye movement Sleep).

We will be practicing getting out of our comfort zones, and into our AWARENESS ZONES.

Between 2am and 5am in the morning your awareness is at its greatest!.

Pancakes and maple syrup for breaky alah! Kyoshi's kitchen, with a Saki Ceremonial Sword Ceremony before breakfast.

Look us up on the web site and also news items.

Inter-Club Competitution (12/July?2008)

The finals were held today at the Shin Gi Tai Dojo and the home ground advantage paid off.  In a very close final Shin Gi Tai just nudged out Tatakai by the smallest of margins.  Congratulations to the team from Shin Gi Tai, well done.

The badges tell the story of the finals.  Congratulations to all....the standard was exceptional.

Brendan Elsworthy won the sparring section and won outright his 2nd heat in a row.  Congratulations Brendan and all homage to his opponents. It is always good competition that brings out the best in us.

We were very pleased to have Mike Coole and our newest (old) member, Tony Caruso for coming along to judge, making sure there was no judges from the same club that were competing.

The A.M.A.A. would like to thank all those who participated in this trial run....thanks for putting up with us....we have found a number of things we should not do, and some that we need to do.

Thank you

Hanshi Revell to be Featured in Blitz Martial Arts Magazine

Ben Stone, Editor of Blitz Martial Arts Magazine, has advised us that Gary Simpson's interview with AMAA President Hanshi Barrie Revell will be published in its next edition (August 2008). This will be great timing. Gary hopes to be able to have a copy to show the 500+ attendees at Kancho Steve Miranda's 8th Dan Grading Celebration at the Adelaide Hilton Hotel on Saturday 2nd August 2008.

All AMAA members should keep their eye out for this interview. They will learn quite a few surprising things about their President - all good, of course!

Z.S.K Nature Dojo

The Z.S.K. Nature Dojo this morning was again well attended for the early hour and the bite of the cold.

Under what I term 'The Tree of Life', inside Belair National Park, we again celebrated the uniqueness of Nature to be out in the elements when the logical mind says to stay in bed.

The Absuchi Katas when performed in unison with nature, raise the 'Magical Brain' to its Aware Status, and away from its survival mode, which is both a biochemical, biodegradable entity, and very logical.

Thank you to Jessy, Michael, Stuey, and Ruth for celebrating ISA'S anniversary this morning.

Next Zen Suru Kirisuto Nature Dojo will be held at Glenelg beach, at 7.30 am July the 13th at the end of Pier Street Glenelg.

For those interested afterwards we will be ICE BERGING in the water for 15 minutes a cold shower and then a hot breakfast at Jetty Road.

Ice Berging is keeping the complete body covered in cold water without much movement to allow the Ki to rise with the blood system, until the body goes very warm like in a bath. This is fantastic for the Human Nervous System, and is an old Samurai tradition.

Incidently back in the 1990's I used the Ice Berging technique to treat many of my clients with Lethargy, Bi - Polar, and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome with great success. I had their written permission to throw them in, even when they opted out on the beach.

Pictures were taken outside Belair National Park today the 22nd June ... Kyoshi Redman - Mike - Stu - Ruth then it is me on the camera and they were joined by Jessy.

On behalf of the AMAA I want to welcome Tony Caruso of the Shotokan Karate Club of Adelaide. Being a Shotokan stylist myself, if I can be of any assistance to your club, Tony, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Gary Simpson's Adelaide AMAA Visit 12th to 16th of May (16th May 2008)

Western Australian karate instructor Gary Simpson displayed his knowledge of the martial arts freely at local Adelaide AMAA clubs from Taperoo to Burragah to Edwardstown.  It was a lightning trip but thanks to AMAA President Barrie Revell he got to meet and exchange ideas with many AMAA members representing many AMAA clubs.

On Tuesday night he taught self defence techniques and theory with a little bit of  bunkai/oyo at Hanshi Revell's Shin Gi Tai dojo. A number of  kyu and dan grades came from other clubs to participate along with the Shin Gi Tai members. Gary said, "It was great to catch up with Geoff Worden and Andrew Quin again. We are getting to see a fair bit of one another."

Then on Wednesday he spent time with the kids at Roy Fuller's Bushido Karate Club.  Gary presented certificates to every child and two special ones to Sensei Roy and Hanshi Revell.  One lucky little fellow won a copy of Gary's board game - "Budo the Martial Arts Adventure." Two of Sensei Roy's junior black belts performed excellent katas while Gary demonstrated weapon katas of the bo, kama and tonfa. Roy presented Hanshi Revell and Kyoshi Simpson with beautiful desk clocks inscribed with "Bushido Karate" plaques for their efforts. Thanks Roy. The clocks are greatly appreciated!

On Thursday Gary and Hanshi Revell travelled to Kancho Steve Miranda's National Karate Academy at Taperoo where Gary taught Reality One Step Sparring to a gathering of 50 students and high ranking black belt Instructors (see photo at:  http://www.nationalkarate.com.au/ ) Gary said, "Kancho Steve Miranda has a wonderful club full of attentive students and very talented, knowledgeable and dedicated instructors who are all eager to learn as much as they can." Gary said he wanted to thank Kancho Steve for allowing him to be the guest instructor for the evening.  Many of the senior instructors came a long way to attend at short notice - many after finishing teaching at their own individual clubs. Gary especially wanted to make mention of the excellent partnering skills of Kyoshi Gregg Braun (6th Dan) whose professionalism made his job so much easier on the night. "Gregg couldn't have made my job any easier," said Gary who added, "Kyoshi Gregg is very strong and very willing and has excellent budo skills. He is a credit to Kancho Steve Miranda."

Gary also caught up with Andrew Payne (SA Karate Club) and Roger Coole (Tatakai Martial Arts) for a "cup of tea" on Thursday afternoon where they discussed a number of issues of concern to the AMAA.

All members were very happy with Gary's teaching and enjoyed what they learned  Gary is most welcome to return anytime. In fact, he is set to return to Adelaide in early August 2008 to help celebrate Kancho Steve Miranda's forthcoming 8th Dan promotion.

Gary sincerely thanks Hanshi Barrie Revell for organising the training venues and for driving him all over Adelaide. "It shows the level of  committment that Barrie has to the  future wellbeing and progress of the AMAA," said Gary. "I'm really looking forward to my next visit. This is what the AMAA is all about - sharing and exchanging ideas in harmony and goodwill for the benefit of all members."

Andrew's Footnote:  I will remember with a smile going through the beginning of Empi Kata and Gary's Bunkai/Oyo for it in the car park of the Pier Hotel Thursday afternoon.  Gary will teach anywhere, anytime, that is how much he loves the martial arts.

The Giants Cave (11th of May 2008)

Thanks to all who attended .. Zen Suru Kirisuto Nature Dojo .. this morning at the Giant's Cave at Morialta Conservation Park.

Because of Mother's Day we kept it short and powerful.

Today we chanted the cadence of the powerfull Zen Buddhist mantra  .......  Ahuntha Buddah Siva Ohm.

The large cave magnified our cadence throughout the park (onlookers stopped!)

Again we performed Absuchi Kata to the rising sun in Darshan (to listen & let go without agreement or disagreement).

Next Z.S.K. Nature Dojo will be held at Waterfall Gully oval at 7.30am Sunday 1st June 2008.

Green Tea ceremony first at Kyoshi's House near oval.

The oval is situated at the end of Windara Avenue, Burnside, which is a no through road

UPDATE (10th May 2008)

Geoff Worden (4th Dan Shi Gi Tai) visited Western Australia over the weekend of 10 and 11 May 2008. He was welcomed to the WA dojo where members of Zanshin Kai Karate Do and Ren Wa Budo exchanged training ideas and methods with him

Steve Andreazza (3rd Dan) and Geoff armoured up in the Tony Blauer Full Contact suits and went at each other for several rounds over 15 minutes. Some excellent punches and kicks were exchanged between the two. Some ground techniques were also used when the two heavyweights crashed to the  floor in a number of fierce grapples. The session was umpired by Gary Simpson who ensured that the sparring - although willing and powerful - did not get out of hand.

Gary shared some of his in-depth research into the bunkai/oyo of several Shotokan kata with Geoff and also ran through some submission holds which Geoff found "interesting" - especially the Hangetsu Pin and the Standing Carotid Press manouevers. After running several times through a kama kata and Geoff giving the WA members some pointers on the sword the two and a half hour session ended all too quickly.

Gary said he was impressed by the length and complexity of the Shin Gi Tai kata developed by Hanshi Barrie Revell (9th Dan) which Geoff demonstrated, while Geoff said he "enjoyed'  the dynamic power of Gary's One-Step Reality Sparring.

We hope to bring the website a photo of Geoff all kitted up in the Full Contact armour. He looked like a cross between Darth Vader and the Michellin Tyre man.

These exchanges are very beneficial to all member clubs of the AMAA and will continue next week when Gary travels from Perth to Adelaide for a series of classes at various AMAA member clubs. Can somebody please remind him to discuss the "Body of Stone" Principle?

While we acknowledge that not everyone feels comfortable with there photos being displayed on the internet sometimes in the busy atmosphere of the many events held by the Association it is not possible to ask everyone.  If at any time this occurs please contact Andrew and he would be happy to comply with your requests to remove them and apologises for any inconvenience or embarrassment.

Gary Simpson - Kyoshi 7th Dan AMAA, Kyoshi 7th Dan International Santen Karate Association, Member International Society Okinawan/Japanese Karate Do - is planning a trip to Adelaide in the near future. Congratulations to Roy Fuller on his new seat on the A.M.A.A. Grading Committee. Way to go Roy.

(3rd May 2008)

Congratulations to Ray Potterat on being promoted by the Grading Panel on 3rd May 2008 from 5th Degree to 6th Degree black belt. Ray was also assessed for recognition of the title of "Jo-Si Sifu" which means Founder. Ray is the founder of his own kung fu style called Jik Cheung Kung Fu.

This translates as "Vertical Fist Kung Fu." Ray has the strong support of his two Instructors Bruce Jordan and Amedeo Cella (both 3rd degree black belts in the system).

Regards to all,

Gary Simpson

Inter-Club Competitions (3rd May 2008)

Well the third Inter-Club Competitions were held today....Tatakai just seems to be keeping an edge on the others but the competition is fierce to say the least.  Find out who will be battling it out for placing's in the finals.  There is only quarters of points between most competitors.

Individual scores will be posted on the appropriate page and the aggregate scores on it's page. From these you will be able to figure out who is competing against who in the final.

Then we will have to wait until the presentation night to find out the final placings.

Gradings (3rd May 2008

The A.M.A.A. Grading Committee Promoted Ray Potterat to 6th degree, Naomi Higgs to Nidan and Ian Giurcco to Nidan.

Congratulations to all....Please let us know how you feel about it as Naomi has.  Pictures would be nice to....Again congratulations.

Ray with Bruce Jordan

Footnote: Ray must have thought he was being investigated by the FBI....Special Agent Gary Simpson was put on the case....well to be the devils advocate I guess and try his best to find reasons we shouldn't promote Ray.  As you can see Ray stood up to scrutiny as founder of his own style as well as the number of years he has been training is more than worthy of being a 6th degree black belt. It will be easier next time now we have all the background on Ray.

Well the Nin Tai Karate grading was much easier. Their Sensei nominated them, they fit all the criteria for Nidan and we went along and watched them do their thing, which they did very well.

With the loss of three founding members and their respective knowledge of member clubs people asking for gradings will be investigated very thoroughly if their lineage is not already known to the grading committee members.

Nin Tai already knows this as Peter and Damien have done there respective gradings but must wait until July 2008 for them to come into effect....but as Martial Artists we know all about patience, don't we guys.

My Thoughts on my Grading (3 May 2008)

By Naomi Higgs

April 27th 2008 saw the grading of a number of senior students of Nin Tai Karate. I was one of those gradees grading from shodan to nidan. The grading was such that the senior instructors of Nin Tai Karate Renshi Peter Phillips (2nd dan AMAA and 4th dan Shin Gi Tai) and Tashi Damien Seidel (2nd Dan AMAA 3rd dan Shin Gi Tai) would determine rank promotion under the Nin Tai banner and the AMAA grading committee attended to determine rank promotion of an AMAA endorsed nidan.

I can remember not long after grading to my shodan being told by one of the senior instructors that shodan is really like an undergraduate degree, a time where you learn the nuts and bolts, the basics if you will. The ranks after that are more like the post graduate degree where it is more about applying what you know, looking deeper into what you know and developing a greater understanding of what you do. That has certainly been the case for me almost seemingly finding out what I don’t know and have yet to learn as opposed to what I do know.

Whilst what the AMAA grading committee attended on the day was my “official nidan grading”, it was really part of a much larger picture that looked at my overall development in karate since my shodan grading. There was much that counted toward the rank promotion that was assessed by the Nin Tai senior sensei prior to that day, including assessment of my teaching in the dojo.

As always seems to be the case with gradings, nerves rear their ugly head and we all just seem to over think things! I’m not sure if it was the fact the AMAA grading committee were there, or the fact I was almost 3 years older and the other side of 40 compared to the last time I graded or a combination of both but I sure felt the nerves at this grading!

The grading included kata, bunkai demonstrations, board breaking and kumite. It was a jammed pack 2 hours which seemed to just fly by. As often seems to be the case with gradings, there are some things that perhaps I have done better on another day, than I did on the day of the grading, but ultimately all anyone can give is 100% to the day and leave nothing left in the tank at the end. If you leave it all out there on the dojo floor, you can’t ask more of yourself than that, 100% on the day is all that you can give.

Grading alongside some of our senior students that I also teach was a humbling experience. Your students get to see you in action warts and all and realise both what you are capable of and equally that you too are fallible and can screw up just like them! It was also incredibly heartening to have members of the dojo brave a chilly Sunday morning to come out and support us on the day of our grading. Their support and well wishes were most appreciated.

At the end of the grading, President Barrie addressed the group and left us with some words of encouragement and support. All the members of the grading committee were very encouraging and generous with their congratulations after the grading.

Of course it would be remiss for any article written about my nidan grading not to thank the club’s senior instructors Peter Phillips and Damien Seidel. It is the years of commitment and dedication both to the club and to me as a student of theirs, which has seen me successfully attain the rank of nidan. Their passion for karate both in their own training, and in their dedication to the continued improvement of our club is truly inspirational and we (Ian and I) as newly graded nidans are very fortunate to have them both. We are fortunate that we can continue learning from them and their experience and equally to have them on which to model ourselves and our roles as instructors within Nin Tai Karate.

Presidents Thoughts (27th April 2008)

The second round Inter-Club Competition was a noticeable step forward.  It was evident motor skills had stepped up a gear in the set five events.  But at the same time the competitors, in true martial spirit, congratulated each others skills and ability.

It is pleasing to all instructors to see their people rise to the challenge, also the inventiveness of events like spectacular display.  It is obvious the participating clubs are relishing in the opportunity to perform at all levels.  "Karate-Jujutsu-self defence-weapons-kata.  Traditional eclectic, modern, "New Traditional" all got it going and got it going well!

As always "kudos" to all involved, from volunteers on the door to the girls on the B-B-Q, organisers and A.M.A.A. officials.

My regards to you all.   See you at round three.  Believe in yourself.

The Nin-Tai gradings went well for all concerned, especially Naomi Higgs and Ian Giurco passing their Nidan today.

Congratulations to all and sundry.

Barrie Revell

Pictures to come. (Andrew)

Inter Club Competition (6th April 2008)

The next Inter Club Competition will be held on the 3rd of May.

The next competition venue will be at the Tatakai Dojo at 29 Shepherds, Christies Beach.

News from Nin Tai Karate

Upcoming Event (November 2007 for the 27th of April 2008)

Update:  The time to be there is 10.00am for a 10.30am start.

The AMAA has been advised that one of its member clubs, Nin Tai Karate, is having a grading day on Sunday 27th April, 2008. Nin Tai Karate will run the grading in the same manner as the last one attended by AMAA officials.

Two Shodans, Naomi Higgs and Ian Giurco, are expected to undertake their Nidan gradings and the AMAA Grading Panel has been asked to officiate and give its opinion on the applicants.

If successful it is envisaged that Naomi and Ian will be awarded a Nin Tai certificate and, if appropriate, a certificate of rank from the AMAA.

Nin Tai Karate chose the date well in advance to co-incide with three other students undertaking gradings to Shodan. It is also expected that one will test for 2nd kyu and a number of others will test for lower grades.

The AMAA wishes all applicants well but will only consider AMAA rank certificates for the higher grades.

Child Safety Policy (6th April 2008)

Our Public Officer, Red,  has been working hard on our behalf finding all the do's and don'ts of the new act.

We are in a unique position in the Martial Art world it would seem as we are a not for profit organisation and an incorporated body.

Keep your eyes fixed to this page if you teach children as we will have an exciting offer for financial members.

A number of you have asked me what is the format of each Nature Dojo.

Each sitting of the Nature Dojo is a complete meditation and Zen  movement in itself.

It embelishes the "Law of Momentum" to allow an awakening of the  "Restless Spirit",

to then move into the"Law of Self Approval"

Each sitting is different, with the core philosophy the same, this  allows for a cascading effect of Self Realization under the mantle of Nature.

Nature is forever  watching, giving and receiving.Whether Nature is rain, hail, storm, sunny, fire, air, wood or water, the kata's are performed to acknowledge the completeness of Nature,  therefore the completeness of Self.

I have added the programme which we performed for the first Nature Dojo as an example.

This is a link to Reds biography where you can see the format of his first Nature Dojo.

Please be there 12.30pm. for a 1.00pm start on Saturday the 5th of April 2008..  All welcome....come for a look and you may want to participate in our next Competition.  Free membership for clubs that participate in our Inter-Club Competition for the first time next year.

See you there.

Grading Panel (18th of March 2008)

My apologies for leaving such a prominent member, as Gary Simpson, from our grading panel.  Although he is far away the input he has on the association is much appreciated and well received.

Does Your Club or Organisation Provide a Child Safe Environment (Saturday 1st March 2008)

We at the A.M.A.A. take our responsibility to our members, member clubs and the children within our and their care.  We have decided to formulate a policy within the guidelines set down by our State Government.

A law was passed on the 1st of January that all clubs and organizations should develop child safe policies and standards.

A.M.A.A. has taken it on themselves to develop this policy so it's members don't have to worry about doing it, we will do it for you.

Our Public Officer, Dr.Redman Crosby will work with the South Australian Government and develop a plan that is acceptable to them so we can be assured that we are continuing to provide a child safe environment for all the children that participate in programs at our member clubs.

Australian Martial Arts Association Press Release – Major Forthcoming Interview for Blitz Martial Arts Magazine

Adelaide, South Australia (Sunday 24 February 2008 – 11.30am)

In what has been a weekend of major announcements for the AMAA, the Executive Committee

has also announced the forthcoming interview between its Western Australian State Representative,

Gary Simpson, and its President, Barrie Revell in Blitz magazine.

The interview was conducted and written by Gary after a weekend of training in Western Australia

where Hanshi Barrie Revell and two of his senior members, Geof Worden (4th Dan) and Andrew Quin

(3rd Dan) held sword seminars across the weekend.

Gary said, “It was a fantastic weekend where we were treated to techniques of the katana and bokken.

Barrie’s ability with the sword has been well known to me for many years. He is pretty incredible with it.

My members were really enthusiastic and we were extremely grateful to have Hanshi Revell and his assistants

over here. From his perspective Barrie said, “This is what the AMAA is all about – sharing of knowledge between members.”

When asked how the interview came about Gary replied, “Having written a recent article for Blitz with Kyoshi Bruce Clayton (6th Dan) when I was training in California last year, I thought it was long overdue that Barrie got some recognition. I grilled him for over an hour and the information that I got was very enlightening. It will be extremely interesting for the readers.”

To read the Clayton interview refer to Blitz Vol. 22 No 1 (pages 74 to 80). For all further information on the Revell interview contact the Editor of Blitz Magazine.

Update (Thursday 6th March 2008)

There are three pages for you to view for the Inter-Club Competitions, they are Team Scores, Individual Scores and some specific rules for the Team Competitions.

A.M.A.A. Inter-Club Championships (Saturday 1 March 2008)

The first Inter-Club Championships were held today at the Tatakai Dojo.  The clubs all participated with a good martial spirit.

The teams competed in our new style tournament which goes over several months until we have an overall winner at the end.

Keep your eyes on these web pages because the Championship Scores will be up as soon as the scores come through.

We were told today that: Blue (S.A. Karate) defeated Green (Nin Tai Karate) and Red (Tatakai) defeated Yellow (Shin Gi Tai) all the best for next time everyone.

President Barrie Revell also did a demo of knife defences to entertain us during the break.

In the fighting section we had an open competition and all the fighters did well.

Next month, Saturday April 5th, at 1.00pm we will reconvene at a difference venue soon to be announced.

Also at the moment the committee meetings are immediately after the Inter-Club Championships, that if we can get the members to stop socialising (just kidding).

It was exceptionally good how the competitors mixed together with the officials and each other.  There were still people there when we left after our meeting yesterday.

Promotion (Saturday 1st March 2008)

Gary Simpson 7th Dan (Western Australian Representative) Nominated Andrew Payne to be promoted to 5th Dan, he was seconded by Roger Coole 6th Dan (vice president).

Barrie had been aware of this item for a while but put it off until our committee meeting so it could go through the proper channels.

The other members of the grading committee were in agreement and the committee unanimously voted for this to go ahead immediately.

Andrew is very appreciative of their faith in him and will continue to use his time and talents for the betterment of the A.M.A.A., their members and the members of S.A. Karate.

His students were happy that their Sensei was recognised for his ability, knowledge and his work for the A.M.A.A.

Grading Booklet (Saturday 1st march 2008)

The committee had a chance to peruse the new grading booklet written by Gary Simpson.

They liked what they saw and there was much discussion and debate over the contents thereof.

Barrie didn't want to rush into anything so he is postponing accepting it as an official A.M.A.A. document as it is harder to undo than to do such a action.

We will discuss it at the next meeting and hopefully come to a decision

Minutes (Wednesday 5th March 2008)

We have decided to take the minutes down from our website as the highlights are posted here anyway.

Most of you don't need to read all the boring bits.

Hanshi Revell's Promotion (Saturday 1st March 2008)

Hanshi Barrie Revell's Students were over the moon that he was promoted to 9th Dan last month.

After a lifetime in the Martial Arts Barrie was pinned down by committee members to be accept his 9th Dan grading.

Barrie was heard to say "am I better than I was yesterday" and "what next 10th Dan, the more 10th Dans there are the less it means".

A very unusual Martial Artist that you have to twist his arm to take a grade.

Nin Tai Karate News (November 2007 for the 27th of April 2008)

We are having a club grading on Sunday 27th April when our two shodans, Naomi Higgs and Ian Giurco, are wishing to grade to Nidan.

The AMAA grading committee have been asked to officiate and give an opinion on the grading (Nin Tai Karate will run the grading the same as the last one attended by the AMAA).

It is envisaged that they will be granted a Nin Tai certificate, and if appropriate a certificate of rank from the AMAA.

We chose that timing as we also have 3 other students grading to shodan and one to 2nd kyu, and probably a handful of lower grades.  These grades would only be given by our club.

Members Emails (3rd March 2008)

Members who would like an @amaa.org.au email address contact me here as there are more email addresses than we can use.

There will be a $20 set up fee for this and $10 per year to help with the maintaining of the website.

Sponsors and Advertisers welcome.  If you have a Martial Arts product then this is an ideal location to advertise.

The following upcoming events are our focus (28 February 2008)

1) The next Inter-Club Championship....venue to be announced.

2)  J.S.K.A (Japan Shotokan Karate Association) World Championships, held in Manchester, UK, August 2008.

3)  W.O.M.A.A (World Organisation Martial Arts Athletes) Centenary World Games, held in Olympic Park Homebush, Sydney. Time TBA. The organisers of this event have asked for assistance with the organising of this event. I have been asked to be the Australian World president representative for this event. I will be having discussions with other high profile martial artists re this event in the near future.

I have recently been been speaking  to an Australian Olympian Boxer Taffy Davies about training and punching techniques and other boxing methodologies. It is clear that martial arts could benefit from some boxing ideals. Taffy, amiable as ever, recounted his time meeting with Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay) and discussing fighting Martial Artists (which they both ended up doing). It is always nice to speak to people with authority. Concise, factual and exact to the point.

2008 looks to be heading towards a great year for the A.M.A.A. and well done to Gary Simpson for his article published in Blitz magazine January edition.

President B.Revell

AGM NEWS (2008)

We had a very successful AGM where all committee members who were voted in for a two year period recommitted themselves to finish there terms.

At this meeting we followed through on what was Bill Vaughan's wishes over 2 years ago, that Barrie be made 9th dan, reluctantly he received the recommendation of the committee.

Sadly we decided we needed to replace the Public Officer and after some explanation of the position Dr. Redman Crosby said he would submit his name.

He was then elected in the normal manner.  We would like to send a sincere thanks to the previous Public Officer, Karol Stojko and wish him well.

We also decided we may need to co-opt some more members for the committee as time goes on.

Australian Martial Arts Association Press Release – New Grading Standard

Adelaide, South Australia Saturday 23 February 2008 – 2.30pm

The AMAA Executive Committee is excited about the soon to be released booklet outlining a new set of guidelines for the promotion of rank of its members.

Drawn up by a senior member of the AMAA, the comprehensive 14 page booklet covers all aspects of rank and entitlement.

A spokesman for the AMAA said: “The AMAA supports the fair and equitable advancement of all its members. This new booklet will ensure that all members will be treated fairly across-the-board by providing a common structure for applicants to be measured against.”

Under the new guidelines the Grading Panel will review all applications and advise any applicant if his or her application is likely to proceed or not and what testing requirements and/or other materials will be required.

The spokesman also said: “A new grading form has also been designed where each applicant can check their individual credentials against the guidelines required.”

President Barrie Revell described the new document as “the AMAA’s bible for future rank promotions.”

For all further information contact the Grading Panel or the President, Hanshi Barrie Revell.
