AGM 2009

February is our AGM and this is an important one as many positions become vacant.

As Barrie Revell will not be President from February 1st our Public Officer will Chair the AGM.

Needless to say I have not been informed otherwise, at this late date, we can expect that Barrie will be standing again.

According to our constitution on the odd years the office of President and Treasurer are voted upon.  As our Vice President has resigned his position has become vacant.

Two committee members must also be voted upon, as Red stepped down as a committee member when he became Public Officer therefore it is only Geoffrey Wordens position that is vacant but we still need to fill two positions.

Therefore we need volunteers for these positions: President, Vice President, Treasurer and two committee members.

Those who put their hands up for any of these positions can be asked to sit on the committee in an ad hoc capacity.

Please let me know your desire to serve and in what capacity ASAP.  If we do not know who are available then we cannot deliberate our vote correctly, especially those from country and interstate who send proxy votes.

This time it is correct to vote for an individual....there was a mix up at our special meeting as a number of proxy votes were for a person when they should have been for a motion.   This time we vote for a person in a specific position.

Please let me know soon as I will have to badger people otherwise

Constitutional ruling on voting

3.3 Only full members have a vote at the AGM or in Special Meetings.

Constitutional ruling on committee members

4.4 All office-bearers, where possible, should be financial members in good standing for a period of five (5) or more years and have served on the committee.

4.5 The four (4) other members of the AMAA (as mentioned in 4.3 above), where possible, should be financial members in good standing for a period of not less than 3 year.

4.6 Co-opted committee members, where possible, should be financial members in good standing for a period of not less than 1 year

4.7 All members of the Committee must be financial members of the AMAA.

If you are outside of these parameters please apply but be aware that it may affect your ability to stand.

A good time was had by all at the Annual AMAA Christmas Dinner.

A nice clock was presented to Roger Coole in appreciation for the work he devoted to the A.M.A.A. over the years.  He has retired from his long association with the committee (20 plus years) but remains a firm supporter and member of the A.M.A.A.

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Just to keep you all informed that I had my final interview with Blitz martial arts magazine and I will feature in the January Blitz.

I have also placed a half page advert in the magazine for all the National Karate Academies.

All credibility must go to Kyoshi Gary Simpson in Perth as wrote the article and contacted Blitz magazine personally.

We have had a great year……….and 2009 is looking to be a bigger and better year for all of us at NKA.

(31st October 2008)

Tony Caruso received his long overdue 4th dan certificate from Gary Simpson (on behalf of the AMAA) when he visited him on the 20th of October.

From L to R - Andrew Quin and Geoff Worden (Shin Gi Tai), Pat and Ric Caruso (Shotokan Karate Club of Adelaide), Gary Simpson (Zanshin Kai Karate Do of WA), Renshi Tony Caruso, Andrew Payne (SA Karate) and Brad and Terry (Shotokan Karate Club of Adelaide).

Well done Tony.

Brief Review of Gary Simpson’s Adelaide Visit of AMAA Member Clubs 18th  to 22nd October 2008.

On Saturday 18 October Kyoshi Gary Simpson of Zanshin Kai Karate Do Western Australia, in conjunction with AMAA President, Hanshi Barrie Revell, presented a self defence and weapons seminar for the instructors and students of Professor Steve Miranda’s National Karate Academies at the NKA’s Taperoo Dojo. Various elements of self defence, knife defence, katana and bo were taught during the 3.5 hour seminar.

Many high ranking instructors of the NKA were present including Kyoshis Craig Smith and Gregg Braun, Shihan Shannon Clifford and Renshis Joe Deinnocentis and Luke and Lynne Schultz. Gary also demonstrated defensive techniques for several unusual attacks such as garroting, suffocation using a plastic bag over the head and a simulated chloroform attack using tissues soaked in perfume and after-shave.

After the seminar Prof Steve took Barrie and Gary a big group of attendees to a local Glenelg restaurant for a relaxed evening of enjoying each other’s company.

On Monday 20 October, Gary, Sensei Geoff Worden and Sensei Andrew Quin (both of the Shin Gi Tai club), visited the Salisbury Dojo of Renshi Tony Caruso’s Shotokan Karate Club of Adelaide. Sensei Andrew Payne of South Australian Karate also attended.

Gary was very impressed with the standard of karate on display at Renshi Tony Caruso’s club. Tony’s assistant instructors, Sensei Terry and Sensei Brad and Tony’s sons, Sensei Pat and Sensei Rick, are all well versed in hard and fast Shotokan techniques. During the evening Gary held a session advanced oyo using selected bunkai from the many Shotokan kata. He also demonstrated bo, tonfa and kama katas and a Goju kata, Seiunchin. Renshi Tony reciprocated showing a bo kata and Rohai.

On Tuesday 21 October 2008, Gary took the NKA’s Glenelg Dojo for Renshi Joe Deinnocentis. The class focused primarily on kata and kumitachi for the bokken plus several knife defences that weren’t shown during the weekend seminar.

On Wednesday 22 October, Hanshi Barrie Revell and Gary traveled to the Modbury North Dojo of Sensei Roy Fuller’s Bushido Karate Club. Gary taught basic karate kihon, tai-sabaki techniques and reflex exercises to the members. He also demonstrated kama and tonfa kata and techniques. Sempai Munawwar and Sempai Uighur demonstrated several Kyokushinkai kata. Both performed very well.

Gary also made special mention of Roy Fuller who again very kindly met him at the airport and took him to his hotel. Gary said, Roy is a great ambassador for the AMAA. He does a fantastic job teaching more than a hundred juniors each week and has their best interests at heart. He is the elder statesman of the AMAA and is much respected.” In all, it was a wonderful week that helped to strengthen the ties between AMAA clubs and senior instructors.

(21st October 2008)

President Barrie Revell would like to apologise to all committee members for the mix up but the Christmas Dinner will be held at the Watermark Hotel at Glenelg, the same as last year on the 7th of December.

Please RSVP for you and your partner before the 20th November.

See you all there on the 7th of December at 12:30pm.

Kyoshi Gary Simpson from Perth will be in Adelaide again in mid October 08 to conduct a series of weapon seminars and other training for member clubs of the AMAA.

On Saturday 18 October, in conjunction with Hanshi Barrie Revell, he will present a weapon seminar for Professor Steve Miranda's National Karate Academies. Weapons taught will include bo, bokken, fighting sticks, katana and kama.

NOTE - ALL students and instructors MUST have their own weapons to train in these disciplines. No weapon = no training.

 New photos (21th September 2008)

I have just finished editing some photos given to me by President Barrie Revell (150 in all) and selected a number to upload for everyone's enjoyment, so they can see him using the sword.

These photos were part of the photo shoot for the Blitz magazine article recently published by them.  Besides Barrie there are some nice pictures of Geoff., Andrew, Shane and Adam.
